This is a shapely tree with a single trunk and broadly conical crown. The leaves are a clear yellow-green, turning a deep golden in fall. Bright yellow flowers, blotched scarlet at the base, appear during summer.

The fruit are like miniature Chinese lanterns, green at first then turning bright pink in fall and paper-brown in winter. Moderately frost hardy, full sun in fertile, well-aerated soil with free drainage. Seaside conditions do not suit them. Prune in early years to establish a single trunk.
