The common olive is a beautiful, picturesque tree with gray/green leaves touched with silver on their undersides. It is a slow grower, to about 30' with the fruit appearing when it is about 10 years old. This is a very long lived tree, there is an olive tree in Greece that is at least 1500 years old. The wood of the olive tree is prized for carving and turning. Generally they require a frost-free climate, but the winters need to be sufficiently cool to induce flowering, while the summers must be long and hot to ensure development and growth of the fruits. Can survive on poor soils. Zones 8-11
